Pope Francis was born on 17th of December 1936,in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was the youngest of five younger brothers and lived in a small house within the Italian immigrant community. Jorge Mario Bergoglio's (Pope Francis) father was a railway worker and his mother was an housewife.
Jorge had once worked as a laboratory technician for a food science lab and a chemistry student during his early years. He was even a bouncer for a nightclub for a brief period of time, something which served to remind him just how much he actually was good with people from all walks of life.
A Calling to Serve:-
He also had a strong religious vocation and entered the Society of Jesus in 1958. He was ordained as a priest in 1969 and made his final oaths as a Jesuit in 1973. He was a teacher and spiritual director as a Jesuit with an extremely strong devotion to teaching and pastoral ministry.
He was named the provincial superior of the Jesuits in Argentina in 1973 and led the order through Argentina's period of unrest, the Dirty War. There he was faced with a series of attempts to save victimized ones and provide refuge for harassed ones.
Rise in the Church:-
Jorge Mario Bergoglio was consecrated Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and was a poor-thinking and humble person who made a common flat his home instead of an episcopal palace. He never thought twice about traveling by public transport instead of a chauffeur. Throughout his priestly and episcopal life, he spent enormous amounts of time in performing ministries to the poorest section of society, such as slum dwellers, homeless, and unemployed.
Pope John Paul II made him a cardinal in 2001. He was a cardinal who continued to be a voice for social justice, pastoral ministry, and an open Church. His identification of himself with the poor and marginalized earned him respect from within as well as without the Catholic Church.
Becoming Pope:-
He was elected on March 13th 2013 to be the Roman Catholic Church's 266th pope in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. He was the start of a string of firsts: first Jesuit pope, first American pope, and first non-European pope in over 1,200 years.

Reform: Reforming the Vatican's financial systems and embracing transparency, and expanding the range of opportunities for laity and women in Church leadership. His reforms in the curia department were intended to make the institution more efficient and accountable.
Challenges and Criticisms.
While Pope Francis is overall popular, he has also been criticized by certain elements of the Church who are more traditionalist in their views for being too liberal in some ways. He has also been faulted on how he addressed the issue of sexual abuse, and most agreed more forcefully in dealing with holding people accountable and upholding justice.

Pope Francis' life is one of perseverance, prayer, and humility. The rise of this blue-collar ghetto boy of Buenos Aires to world Catholic leader is a testament to his tireless commitment to service to others. His early years of life as a chemical technician, schooling in schools, and survival during periods of political turmoil have prepared him for his unconventional style of leadership.
He has spent his entire life tearing down walls, either it was to advance the environmental cause, for dialogue between people of different religions, or bringing together those at the fringes of society. His own simple life, even as pope, is a message that he stands by what he preaches.
Legacy and Continuing Impact
As he was the spiritual head of more than one billion Catholics across the globe, Pope Francis lives in Vatican City and yet is accountable for there Church. Pope Francis passed away on 21st of April 2025, at the age of 88 years, but his legacy on the mission and doctrine of the Church is still affecting many individuals globally.
Pope Francis life is one of humility, strength, and unyielding devotion to the service of others. His words and actions invite people from all parts of the globe to embrace acts of compassion, justice, and respect for our world and in so doing leave a permanent stamp on human history.
